Mirror Temple, Bangkok
Wat Phuttha Prommayan, around 90 minutes from Bangkok in Chachoengsao Province, is probably better described as Thailand’s Mirror Temple or the Gold and Silver Temple.
And it is absolutely stunning.
The temple sits on a small island surrounded by the Bang Pakong River, so you actually have to catch a little boat across to visit it.
But it was what we found inside that made this temple so memorable. Mirrored walls, a huge golden Buddha downstairs and then upstairs, an incredible silver Buddha surrounded by even more mirrors. It was sparkly, beautiful and very different from any of the temples we’ve visited around Bangkok.

Getting There from Bangkok
We initially thought about catching the train from Bangkok to Chachoengsao and then taking a taxi or Grab for the remaining 30 minutes to the temple.
Once we looked at the train times, though, it all started becoming a bit of a mission.
Honestly, the easiest option is just to drive or organise a taxi or Grab from Bangkok.
We booked a Grab one way from our condo, and the job was picked up almost immediately. The driver then started messaging us about arranging the return trip as well.
When he picked us up, we cancelled the Grab booking and organised directly with him to drive us there, wait for us while we visited the temple and then take us all the way back to Bangkok.
It cost us 2,500 THB return.
It was definitely more expensive than using public transport, but for us it was easily the simplest and fastest option. We didn’t have to worry about finding transport back from the temple, and our driver was ready when we were finished. For two people doing the trip as a day out from Bangkok, I would happily do it this way again.
Catching the Boat to the Temple
You can’t actually walk or drive across to the temple.
When you arrive, you pay 20 THB and make your way down to the little pier, where a local boat takes you across the river. The boat ride only takes a few minutes and it’s nothing elaborate, but it does make arriving at the temple a bit more fun.
What to Wear: And Don’t Forget Your Socks
You need to wear socks on the tiled floors around the temple and inside.
If you’re like us and arrive without them, you can buy a pair for 20 THB before catching the boat, so it’s not a big deal.
Like any temple in Thailand, you also need to dress respectfully with your shoulders and knees covered. You won’t be allowed entry otherwise.
The Silver Temple
The exterior is covered in silver detailing from the roof right down to the walls, with floral patterns, traditional Thai designs and naga serpents throughout.
Gold Downstairs, Silver Upstairs
Wat Phuttha Prommayan has two levels, and each one feels completely different.
The mirrors are everywhere, catching the light and reflecting the gold and silver around the rooms.
The Golden Buddha
On the ground floor is the huge golden Buddha surrounded by mirrored walls and columns.
I loved this level. The gold against all those little mirrors is beautiful, and everywhere you look the light is reflecting off something.
The Silver Buddha
Then we walked upstairs and saw the silver Buddha.
This was my favourite part. The Buddha itself is beautiful, but combined with the mirrored walls covering the ordination hall, the whole room sparkles.
It was breathtaking. I don’t think our photos really show just how sparkly and beautiful this room was in person.
We Almost Had the Temple to Ourselves
Another thing I loved was how quiet it was.
We visited at around 1pm on a Friday, and there were hardly any people there.
Most of the other visitors were Thai families and couples, and we were the only Farangs.
Everyone was really welcoming and kind. I’d read that early morning or late afternoon is the best time to visit because of the light and cooler temperatures, but honestly, don’t let that stop you coming at another time.
We arrived right in the middle of the day and it was still absolutely beautiful.
And because there weren’t many people around, we could take our time walking through both levels and looking around without feeling rushed.
There are a few basic facilities too. On the island there’s a small shop selling drinks and snacks, as well as toilets. Back in the parking area where you buy your boat ticket, there’s a small food market selling snacks, fruit and drinks, with more toilet facilities available.
Inside the temple, you can purchase flower offerings on both levels. There’s also a blessing hall and donation boxes if you’d like to make an offering during your visit.
Is Wat Phuttha Prommayan Worth Visiting?
Definitely! It takes a little more effort to get here than visiting a temple in central Bangkok, but I’m so pleased we made the trip.
The silver exterior, mirrored interior and the contrast between the golden Buddha downstairs and silver Buddha upstairs make it something completely different.
It actually reminded us a little of the White Temple in Chiang Rai. Not because they’re the same, but because both are so detailed and visually different from the more traditional temples we’ve visited in Thailand.
For somewhere only around 90 minutes from Bangkok, I’m surprised more international visitors don’t seem to know about it. If you’re looking for somewhere different to explore outside Bangkok for the day, put this one on your list.
I think it’s one of those hidden gems that’s absolutely worth the trip.
